The bizarre square track has built at the Tonghe Country Stadium China. The circuit - with its sharp right-angles was built as part of a major refurbishment of the Tonghe Country stadium which has attracted the ire of athletes who have called it an "abomination." Some locals speculated the angular running track was built to help "avoid collisions" but stadium officials offered a different explanation, saying they were forced to make the last minute makeover after senior Communist Party leaders announced a snap visit. According to one official, painting right angles was faster than painting curves.
