Indian cricketer Sachin Tendulkar on Tuesday was conferred with India’s highest civilian award, Bharat Ratna, by President Pranab Mukherjee in a ceremony at the Rashtrapati Bhavan in Indian capital of New Delhi.

Tendulkar was nominated for the award last year and has become the first sportsperson and the youngest recipient of the award. 42 other personalities including scientist CNR Rao were also conferred the award in honour of their contribution to the society.

Tendulkar retired from cricket in November 2013. He is considered as one of the most accomplished cricket players of the world with playing a record 200 test matches at an average run rate of 53.58.

His total of 51 centuries in Test matches and 49 in ODIs are world records for highest number of centuries by a batsman. Tendulkar has also previously received Padma Vibhushan - the country's second highest civilian honour.
