DaimlerChrysler Kicks Some Sport in the SLK-Class

The Mercedes-Benz SLK has been reinvented by Danish manufacturer Kleemann, as the GTK.

The company is best known for their long experience in Kompressor technology and exclusive styling products for Mercedes-Benz cars.

Internationally experienced car designer Christian Brandt headed the top secret GTK design project.

Conceived not only as a sportscar project, the GTK is also a design and technology development platform for future Kleemann performance and styling solutions for Mercedes-Benz cars.

The GTK features carbon fibre body panels as well as many existing high performance Kleemann add-ons, such as the Kompressor system, alloy wheels, and brakes.

Featuring the naturally aspirated SLK 55 AMG engine fitted with a complete Kleemann Kompressor system, the GTK boasts 540 HP of power and 700 Nm of torque.

This power is transferred to the road through a 7-speed automatic gearbox, a limited slip differential and ultra low profile Toyo T1-R tires on 20" alloy rims designed specifically for the GTK.

0-62 mph takes only 3.7 seconds and the car continues the brutal acceleration right up to the electronically limited top speed of 186 mph.

How many examples of the Kleemann GTK ever roll out is unclear - the company will only say it is not planning mass production, sadly.

Red Hot: Mercedes Kicks Some Sport in the SLK-Class

STUTTGART, Germany - Mercedes-Benz unveiled a new sports package for its SLK-Class on Tuesday that puts a premium on the color red. As in red seatbelts, floor mats edged in red and red needles in the instrument cluster.

The sports package, which the company says will cost about $1,470-$2,060, is available now.

The new SLK package pays attention to performance, too. It has a lowered sport suspension with 18-inch wheels, a more beefy braking system with brake calipers bearing "Mercedes-Benz" lettering, and an AMG breakaway edge at the rear.

Optional equipment includes the new 7G-Tronic sport automatic transmission with steering-wheel shift paddles. On the SLK280 and SLK350, the company also offers a special sport air filter for a more "throaty" sound.

Mercedes said it contrasts the red cabin trim with a black roof liner, black trim to the left and right of the steering wheel, and a carbon-look trim strip above the glove compartment.
