Volkswagen T6 Going To Be All-Electric Camper Van

Volkswagen has been consistent with building a retro-style camper van for over a decade. In 2001, it showed the Microbus concept, and a decade later there was the Bulli. Neither of them ever actually saw production. But now Volkswagen's iconic vehicle may be set to return as an all-electric camper van according to recent revelations from company board member Dr Heinz-Jakob Neusser. The next-generation Volkswagen Transporter workhorse van debuts on April 15, but VW is also working on a more retro-inspired van concept that would be motivated by electric power.

Despite being called the T6, Volkswagen's new Transporter won't be that much technically different compared to the current T5 as the German marque has already hinted it will use the same platform while the design is going to be influenced by the Tristar concept. The evolutionary exterior styling will be matched with a fresh interior cabin incorporating Volkswagen's latest infotainment systems.

Details about the engine lineup are not available at this point, but most likely these will be carried over from the Passat B8. We remind you the aforementioned Tristar concept had a 2.0-liter four-cylinder TDI with 201 bhp (150 kW) and 450 Nm (331 lb-ft) sent to a 4MOTION all-wheel drive system through a 7-speed DSG transmission. The hardware setup granted a 0-62 mph (0-100 km/h) run in 10 seconds and a 115 mph (185 km/h) top speed. Volkswagen says the T6 is programmed to hit dealerships in the second half of the year.
