The Olympic Village erects at the northern end of the north-south axis of Beijing city, along which many of Beijing's historic sites (the Forbidden City, the Temple of Heaven and Qianmen Gate, etc) are located. The 66-hectare Olympic Village comprises two separate areas, namely the residential area and the international area. To the north of the Olympic Village lies the Olympic Forest Park, while to the south of it are the main competition venues. The surrounding environment combines pleasant natural scenery with convenient traffic.

The residential area of the Olympic Village has a clinic, dining halls, a multi-functional library, an entertainment center and a recreational sports zone, as well as apartments for athletes. The recreational sports zone includes a gym, a swimming pool, tennis courts, basketball courts, and a jogging course. The international area will be the place where sports delegations hold welcoming ceremonies, receptions and other activities.

Apartments in the Olympic Village have a total floor area of 370,000 square meters. All the apartments are permanent structures of similar architectural style, including 22 six-storey buildings and 20 nine-storey buildings.

The Olympic Village will open two weeks prior to the opening of the Olympic Games. By then, 16,000 Olympic athletes and 7,000 Paralympic athletes, along with Games officials, will stay in the Village that will all kinds of services ranging from boarding to recreation and entertainment.

Beijing's Olympic Village will set record by housing the largest number of athletes for the longest duration of time in Olympic history. The design, development and construction of the Olympic Village fully reflect the ideals encapsulated in the 'high-level Olympics with distinguishing features' theme and the concept of 'Green Olympics,' 'High-tech Olympics' and 'People's Olympics.'

The Olympic Village is designed to be an environment-friendly home for athletes and officials, where they will experience the splendid culture of China and the international-level living conditions. After the Olympic Games, the Olympic Village will become a residential community, setting an example for post-Games development.

The Olympic Village is planned to be completed in the end of 2007 and will be formally put under the management of BOCOG in early 2008.

The apartments will be auctioned even before the Olympic Games begins. After the Olympic Games, the Olympic Village will be transformed into a residential community and handed over to the owners.
