Day 5 of the NZvIND test match started with an anticipation, all eyes set on the captain, if he could achieve what no New Zealander had so far. To their delight, the captain broke Martin Crowe's record of 299 to go down the history lane as the first New Zealander who scored a triple ton.

McCullum lost his wicket two balls later scoring 302. With 775 minutes of batting and facing 559 balls, this was the longest innings by a New Zealander in test or first class cricket. Another highlight was Jimmy Neesham who made his debut in test cricket with a century, 10th New Zealander to accomplish that. New Zealand declared at 680 runs for 6 wickets, highest score for the Black Caps and one of the best fight backs, leading India by 434 runs.

For team India, Virat Kohli struck his sixth century(105 not out) taking the game to a draw. New Zealand won the series with 1 - 0. Glorious triumph for the Kiwis who hadn't won a test series against India since 2002 - 2003. Although a draw, the Basin Reserve will be remembered for adding three feathers to the Black Caps with two records of their own and a world record - captain's triple ton, McCullum-Watling partnership record and the highest test score for the country.
