Bodiam Castle was built in Sussex during the 14th century and was among the first castles to combine the needs of defense with some comfort for those living there. The moat and high curtain walls provided strong defenses, but there were also carefully planned living quarters within the walls, including a hall and a chapel.

The castle was damaged in the 17th century during the English Civil War, but was restored in the early 20th century and bequeathed to the nation by Lord Curzon, a notable British statesman.
