The zero-emission electric motor has been designed to power the vehicle mainly in city traffic. The lithium-ion batteries powering the motor can be recharged from any electric socket, according to Audi. The automatic start/stop facility, energy regeneration and phases of pure electrical drive reduce the fuel consumption and emissions of the Audi A1 Sportback concept by almost 30 per cent compared to when it is running on the combustion engine alone, according to the car maker.
Fuel consumption is listed at only 3.9 litres per 100 kilometres with a carbon dioxide emission figure of 92 grams per kilometre despite the sporty performance. Acceleration from zero to 100 kilometres is in 7.9 seconds with a top speed of 200 km/h.
The exterior design shows tauter and more masculine features. The basic proportions, with a high vehicle body and a flat window area bordered by a coupe-like roof line, produce a more classic look for a vehicle bearing the four rings. The rear end is rounded off by a two-part spoiler with a centre groove, integrated into the rear window.
The interior has four individual seats. The dashboard and centre console are designed entirely around the driver. A transparent, mesh-like fabric covers the lightweight seat apertures, accentuating the airiness of the design.
With a WLAN connection and special software the driver can use his commercially available mobile phone as an address database, navigation system and audio/video player. At the same time, it can be used as a control unit for several vehicle systems.
