5 of the Tallest Structures Worth Visiting

Post by Umer Farooq » Apr 10, 2010 Views: 3251

Since the oldest time, the architects and the most important leaders of the world always tried to get closer to the sky. Either by building structures, different symbols of their religion and their belief in God, or a proof of the technological advance and of the scientific progress. Here are five of the tallest structures in the world that you should not miss if you ever get in the area:

1. The Eiffel Tower, France (1889 AD, 324m/1,063 ft)

The global icon for France, The Eiffel Tower is also the most visited structure in the world: almost 7 million people get up in the tower each year. The steel structure was built between 1887 and 1889 for a World’s Fair, celebrating the French Revolution. The architect planned to build the tower in Barcelona, but the local authorities thought that the structure was too odd and too high for the city’s landscape. Nowadays it has almost 30 replicas all over the world. Visiting the tower in Paris will cost you from 4.5 to 13 Euros, depending on the level you want to reach.

2. Lincoln Cathedral, England (1311 AD, 160m/525 ft)

Ever since the 12th century, the cathedral dominated the skyline of the city of Lincoln in England and for more than two hundred years, the building was the tallest structure in the world. In 1549, the central spire crashed and it was never built again. You can visit this amazing Gothic cathedral for only 5 pounds (the fee for Adults), and everyone that has been there recommends the roof tours.

3. Sagrada Familia, Spain (not finished, 170m/558 ft)

Designed by one of the most important architects in the modern times, Antoni Gaudi, Sagrada Familia is the masterpiece of this amazing artist. The work on the cathedral started in 1882 and it is estimated to end next year, in September. Sagrada has no less than 17 towers representing the Twelve Apostles, the four Evangelists, the Virgin Mary and, tallest of all, Jesus Christ (170 meters). You can choose to get up there by climbing 400 steps or by taking the elevator. You should keep in mind that admission costs 8 Euros.

4. St. Mary’s Church, Germany (1625 AD, 151m/495 ft)

The biggest cathedral in Stralsund, a northern region of Germany, St. Mary’s Church was built between 1384 and 1478. The cathedral was inspired from St. Mary’s Church located in Lubeck, but it is much taller. Before the collision of the first tower, the cathedral was the tallest structure in the world, between 1625 and 1647, measuring 151 meters. You can visit the church for free, but if you want to climb up in the tower it will cost you 4 Euros.

5. Great Pyramid, Egypt (2570 BC, 146m/479 ft)

The Great Pyramid of Giza is the oldest one of the three pyramids at Giza Necropolis. It is said that the building used to be the funeral tomb for the Fourth Dynasty Egyptian King, King Khufu, and its building lasted just 20 years. The Great Pyramid was the world’s largest structure for more than 3,400 years. You can easily get there from Cairo, Egypt.
