There are a lot of funky-looking gadgets that pass through this office each week, and (some of) them do answer frustrating beauty problems. The Calista Heated Paddle Brush (from QVC) isn’t the craziest-looking tool I’ve ever seen, but unlike your average paddle brush, this one has buttons on the handle, a small display screen, a long electric cord, and a 12-page owner’s manual. Turns out all those extras really do make this thing special.

It combs through hair and detangles like any brush should, but the bristles on this brush are superstiff, like little nylon pegs, and the base is a heated plate. The plate heats up to 410 degrees and warms the hair as you brush it, smoothing minor kinks, taming pesky flyaways, and adding the most gorgeous, glossy shine. This brush can even add impressive volume around the roots if you flip your head upside down and brush in slow, steady strokes, gently combing from the roots downward. I did this on (dare I confess) five-day-old hair, and my matted roots looked freshly blown out. And while it might not be ideal for serious styling, it’s excellent for softening tight bends and curls, like the ones your gym ponytail leaves behind, to a beautiful wave.
