about the images in posts and site slow down
Hi friends,
you may have notice a slow down in site for the last 2-3 days. Site was almost dead and it was very difficult to go around the postings. It was taking about 20 seconds for a page to respond and start load.
Yesterday, i was able to figure out that it was due to some posts which had a lot more images in it. some posts identified had 63,37,35 images in them. This is a too big number of images and the the page weight was about 2-3 MB in size.
it means that on a 512KB DSL connection, it would have taken about more than 60 seconds to load the post assuming that user was not browsing any other site, was not checking his emails etc and you can think of a dial up user.
To improve site performance, some actions has been performed, however i need your suggestions.
should there be limit to maximum number of images in a single post? if so, then what should it be? or alternately, posts can be created in parts. Like "Interesting images Part 1", "Interesting images Part 2" etc
should there be a limit to maximum image size allowed in KB and max dimensions of an image? if yes then what should it be?
another idea is to add thumbnails of the images instead of the full images to the post, clicking on the images will show the full image

Sir,
Restrict it by number of pics, and by the size i.e. mb.

i do not think so that by parts make affect on speed "posts can be created in parts. Like "Interesting images Part 1", "Interesting images Part 2" etc".... well that's nice to Restrict Max num of images and rize as well.
i think some small steps may increase web speed like
1) when your work is finished please logout never close window without logout.
2) when you fond a post that have images please do not reply with image post if you want to reply image post please start new topic and in reply post make a link of your started topic.
3) Make try to use your signature as text (if possible).
4) for maxi file size should be 400K ... if user try to upload more then 400K then if possible then write a module that compress it size.
5) instead of showing full image install thumbnail viewer of JQ if possible.

from my point of view
you should add restriction for 1 post as 5 images per post..
and 20 images per thread
so after 20, it is forced for the user that he has to make a new thread .. as in "part 2"
that would be better..
or i was thinking that xcitefun images should not be hotlinked.. but the images should be thumbnails.. coz that would help in many many ways..
that would save bandwith of xcitefun too and the pages will be loaded faster too
and if u do that then there would be no restrictions in the no. of images per post or thread
thanks,
Shalin Sitwala

hmmmmm
yaar
y not we create such a mechanism that when user upload any pic, what ever the size and what ever the pics in one post...
bolay to he/she is free to upload the size[KBs/MBs] or numbers of pics
BUT BUT BUT
The site should make thumbnails of that pics, and when any user open the POST the site shows the thumbnails of that pics, instead of Large size pics, and if the user wants to enlarge the pic, the pic should have the link to that enlarged pic.
so,
what u say???

Thumb nails of the picture will totally spoil the attractiveness of the post. Restriction of number of pictures per post is a good idea.Restriction the size of picture a maximum size of 800X600 pixels which is suitable for a 14" Monitor is good.It can be done with Microsoft photo editor or any other free software installation. And if anyone replies to any post avoid quote with same pictures attached. One thing as you knows i am part of other forums and there is no problem like this and now a days increased speed on those forums and no restriction has been made. All yahoo groups are facing speed problems one by one.
