At least 50 Afghans, mainly children and youths, have been found suffocated to death in a shipping container in southwestern Pakistan in an apparent human smuggling attempt.
The shipping container, thought to be traveling from Afghanistan through Pakistan to Iran, was found near the border town of Quetta on Saturday.
Pakistani police said that more than 100 people had been hiding in the container.
The illegal immigrants were trapped in the container for 24 hours, and many died from lack of oxygen, police said.
Dozens of the survivors have been taken to hospital for treatment, but the death toll was expected to rise.
Most of the dead were reported to be teenage Afghans and at least five of them were small children.
Kamal Hyder, Al Jazeera's Pakistan correspondent, said the immigrants were first discovered when locals at a lorry stop heard sounds coming from inside the locked container.
