The World Black Pudding Throwing Championship

Post by vicked.vicky » Mar 26, 2009 Views: 2153

The bizarre contest celebrates the ancient rivalry between Lancashire and Yorkshire and attracts people from far away as Australia to the small town of Ramsbottom. This annual event in Ramsbottom sees competitors throw black puddings in an attempt to knock Yorkshire puddings from a 20ft high plinth, a cheeky reference to the centuries-old rivalry between Lancashire and Yorkshire.

The golden grid, on which competitors stand when they throw their puddings, arrived by steam train SD7916 : Ramsbottom Station shortly before noon on Sunday and was escorted to the Royal Oak pub on Bridge Street with much pomp and ceremony. Winning brings celebrity status and the glare of the media spotlight.
