Dance to loose weight

Post by ar » Nov 07, 2007 Views: 3359

Many of us find exercise hard work.
Here's good news: Dance is a great way to give the body a total aerobic workout and burn up calories.

It takes the 'work' out of the exercise session and replaces it with 'fun'!

It lifts up your spirits and is a great social activity as well. Besides, dancing is a great moodlifter.

Dance to be fit!

Here are the health benefits that dancing provides:

~It helps tone muscles, strengthen bones and lose weight.

~Dance is extremely aerobic -- it uses oxygen, burns calories and increases your heart's workload.

~Dance can burn as many calories as walking, swimming or riding a bicycle.

In fact, moderate dancing burns seven calories per minute. Vigorous dancing (like Salsa) burns as many as 100 calories in 10 minutes.

On average, one can burn 420 to 700 calories in a spirited dance class.

Gautam Rajani, an instructor at the popular Shiamak Davar's Dance Workshop in Bandra, northwest Mumbai, highly recommends dancing as a way to be fit. "So many of my clients have come to me saying they have lost three or four kilos in a month, just by dancing here. The key is to be regular and really give it your all. Don't cheat!"

Dance has its benefits too

Dance may not provide all the conditioning you need, but it can help. The degree of cardiovascular conditioning depends on how vigorously you dance, how long you dance continuously and how regularly you dance.

Dr Ashok Mehta, a general practitioner, says, "To get the exercise benefits of dancing, approach it as you would any workout routine. Do some movement for at least 30 consecutive minutes, three times a week, for cardiovascular benefits.

"Make sure you warm up and cool down before and after the session.

"If you dance vigorously enough and don't need to lose much weight, you won't have to walk or do any other exercise. But if you are overweight, you will need to walk or jog the other days of the week."

Here are a few of the dance forms you can try:

Salsa
Dancing the Salsa is one of the best forms of exercise.

Some of the health and fitness benefits of dancing the Salsa are:

~Weight loss and muscle gain.

~It boosts your physical endurance and range of motion

~It increases your flexibility.

~It is a great way to learn great moves that you can show off on the dance floor.

Quick facts

~"Salsa teaches you how to exert greater control over your body. It is a complete workout for the legs and hips, but you will have greater muscle tone all over," says Gautam.

~Dancing the Salsa can burn up to 10 calories a minute.

~It does not have harmful side effects caused by high impact exercises like running.

~On an average, you can burn 400 calories after an hour of Salsa.

Ballroom Dancing
Dimple Jhaveri, a personal banker, says, "My boyfriend and I used to go for Tango and Foxtrot lessons together. It was a good way for us to spend time with each other. He did step on my foot a few times, but it was worth it because we had so much fun. The best thing is, I lost weight!"

Quick facts

~Half an hour of Ballroom Dancing -- like the Quickstep, Waltz, Tango and so on -- is equivalent to brisk walking, in terms of calorie consumption (about 250 calories), for the same amount of time.

~Disco, Rock 'n' Roll and vigorous dances like these burn more calories.

~At least 180 to 480 calories are consumed during an hour of Ballroom Dancing.

Best of all, you can take a partner along!

Ballet
Ballet is a dance form that challenges you mentally and physically.

It can improve the skills of those with clumsy tendencies as well.

Jennifer Bottliwala, 25, can attest to that. She was placed in a Ballet class to develop her coordination when she was five years old.

"You learn to be more confident," says Jennifer, "You learn to have a presence with your body. I think dancers have some of the best well-rounded muscles."

Quick facts

~Training for the Ballet establishes balance and muscles in the dancer's body.

~It develops body rhythm, working both sides of the body equally.

~You can burn over 100 calories over an hour of Ballet.

Rock and Roll, Hip-Hop, Afro-Jazz
These dance forms also challenge the body to move in different ways.

Neha Rohatgi, 18, student at Shiamak's (where you can learn these different kinds dances), says, "You can forget everything else when you dance. You are just laughing and having fun and, before you know it, the workout is over. It's better than spending an hour on the treadmill."

Quick facts

~These dance forms can help people burn anywhere between 100 to 400 calories per hour, depending on individual exertion.

~Gautam agrees, "Both your upper and lower body get a workout because there is such a range of movement and you are using all your muscles. You really become more flexible and agile."

Bollywood Dancing
This is the latest trend in dance classes, where students dance to their favourite film songs.

In addition to being a Mecca for actors-in-training, Bollywood Dance classes are a great way to exercise and indulge your filmi personality.

Karishma Shah, a Bollywood Dance instructor, says, "Bollywood Dance is like any other dance. If you work up a sweat and move hard enough, you will lose weight while having a ball at the same time. It is especially good at strengthening the back and pelvic floor muscles."

Quick fact

With all of complicated and strenuous moves of Bollywood, you can burn 500 calories over an hour.

The last word

Gautam points out, "Dance is an excellent way to de-stress. We are a dance and fitness school because we emphasise on having fun along with dancing and being fit. I think it is a lot more fun than going to the gym and working out individually. Here, you work as a team. It is a superb way to make new friends too."

"The best benefit from dance is that it feels good and because of that you look good," adds Karishma.

So, if the gym doesn't appeal to you, sign up for a dance class pronto!

You are right. Dancing is a very good exercise. It makes your body look fit and healthy. I also do daily work out. two hours dancing a day keeps me perfectly fit.
