Drinking Too Much Tea

According to a recent study, the prolonged consumption of tea, especially black tea may weaken bones, the Indian Express reported.

The study by Japanese researchers found that black tea, in particular oolong varieties, were high in the toxic chemical fluorine, which could work to undermine the strength of human bones.

Senior research scientist Tetsua Shimmura and his colleagues at the Toyama Institute of Health in Toyama Prefecture reported on the existence of the chemical at a meeting of the Japan Society for Biomedical Research on Trace Elements in Tokyo, according to a Japanese news agency.

Researchers found that the fluorine content in tea exceeded the standard for tap water (0.8 milligrams per liter) in about 70 of the 130 instances they analysed.

‘In our study of people’s health in the Inner Mongolian Autonomous Region (in China), we found that the bones of those who consumed water and beverages containing high fluorine density over a long time could develop a propensity to break,’ Shimmura said.

‘They are not in any immediate risk. However, it is desirable that a standard be set and displayed for tea drinks.
