Visualization Social Network Analysis (Hypernetworked World)

Post by chandoo » Apr 01, 2008 Views: 6295

Social network analysis reveals the structures of our hypernetworked world in dazzling new ways. FAS.research has developed breakthrough B2B and B2C applications based on this powerful scientific discipline.

Large Account Management – From Contacts to Contracts

Project Description: The network represents director interlock relationships between Fortune 2000 companies in a European country. We looked at how companies are connected with one another through their board of directors, i.e. Apple and Disney are connected through Steve Jobs. We measured which companies exert the largest influence and what their chains of influence look like with respect to business leads for our client's large account business.

Legend: Nodes represent fortune 2000 companies. The larger the node, the more employees the company has. If company A and company B share a mutual director on their board of directors, they are linked through a line. The thicker the line, the more directors are shared. Red nodes represent large accounts already won. Grey Nodes represent non-clients from our client's perspective.

Wells Fargo - Network Environment

Project Description: The image shows the 2 Step Network Environment of Wells Fargo, the second most influential actor in our Network Analysis of California's Fortune 500 companies. We were interested which director interlock connections make Wells Fargo so powerful and how it is embedded in the greater California/ US industry. Director interlock shows how companies are connected with one another through their board of directors, i.e. Apple and Disney are connected through Steve Jobs. 2 Steps mean that directors on the board of Wells Fargo are connected to all companies displayed in a "friend of a friend" relation. This reveals compelling new insights and business opportunities.

Legend: Triangles represent fortune 500 companies in CA and affiliated companies. The larger the triangle, the more influential the company is (betweenness centrality). Orange triangles are companies directly linked to Wells Fargo. Red triangles are companies linked indirectly to Wells Fargo. If company A and company B share a mutual director on their board of directors, they are linked through a line. Different line colors represent closeness to Wells Fargo.

Fortune 500 USA - Powerlandscapes

Project Description: The image shows director interlock relationships between Fortune 500 companies in the US. We looked at how companies are connected with one another through their board of directors, i.e. Apple and Disney are connected through Steve Jobs. Companies that share a lot of directors among one another create denser zones in the network, thus form little clusters. We measured which companies exert the largest influence overall and within each cluster. The powerlandscapes to the left combine network analysis with GIS and allow for additional compelling insights. This analysis is based on data from SEC filings 2004, thanks to Josh On and team.

Legend: Nodes represent fortune 500 companies in the US in 2004. The larger the node, the more influential the company is in the overall network. Companies of the same color belong to the same network cluster. If company A and company B share a mutual director on their board of directors, they are linked through a line. The thicker the line, the more directors are shared.

Fortune 500 USA - The Power of Three

Project Description: The image shows director interlock relationships between Fortune 500 companies in the US. We looked at how companies are connected with one another through their board of directors, i.e. Apple and Disney are connected through Steve Jobs. Our focus here are strong and robust structures, we refer to as triangles. A and B are connected. With every additional "friend" they make their relationship gets stronger and more robust. The more shared interests at other companies embodied through a director the more structural force for A and B to find an agreement and persue similar goals. This graph is based on data from SEC filings 2004, thanks to Josh On and team.

Legend: Triangles represent fortune 500 companies in the US in 2004. The larger the triangle, the more influential the company is in the overall network. Companies of the same color belong to the same network cluster. If company A and company B share a mutual director on their board of directors, they are linked through a line. The thicker the line, the more directors are shared at third party’s boards.

Ars Electronica – Collaboration Structure of Cultural Projects Over Time

Project Description: When we organized and curated "Language of Networks" together with Ars Electronica for the festival 2004 we took a closer look at all the international artists and scientists collaborating ever since 1979. The graph displays the project collaboration structure from the first days of the Ars Electronica Festival up to 2004. Time Analysis reveals that over the years the global Ars Electronica community has grown together and is interacting more intensly.

Legend: Each white node represents one of the 2575 artists collaborating together on 5176 projects. If two actors collaborated with one another they are connected through a line. Each Festival year represents a different color.

Power Players - Pinpoint and Predict

Project Description: In a large European country we tried to predict who might be invited onto a governmental advisory board to help re-shape policies within a certain sector. Publicly available data about political functions and professional/scientific interaction were analysed. Ex post our methods proved very stable.

Legend: Nodes represent actors. The larger a node, the more influential and central a person is. A line between actor A and B indicates that they both serve on the same board or committee. The thicker the line the more often their paths cross. Yellow marks the political space, Red the professional space and Orange a union of both.

$ Flow: 527/ Advocacy Groups

Project Description: The network visualization shows 527 Receipts and Expenditures in the Elections Cycle 2006. Only flows of at least $ 150,000 between a donor, or donor group, are displayed. The network shows how some corporations but also aggregated groups like retired people, investors or homemakers connect the liberal with the conservative space. Within the liberal space unions play a vital role in difusing donations and connecting liberal advocacy groups.

Legend: Nodes represent both donors and advocacy groups. Red Donor nodes express an affiliation to Republican/ Conservative Advocay Groups (red). Blue Donor nodes express an affiliation to Democratic/Liberal Advocay Groups (blue). Purple Donor nodes indicate donations of at least $ 150,000 to advocacy groups of both sides. The larger the node, the more money was donated/ received. The arrow, which indicates the direction of the money flow, expresses the amount donated. The thicker the line, the more money was donated.

California - Fortune 500 Company Network

Project Description: The image shows director interlock relationships between Fortune 500 companies in California. We looked at how companies are connected with one another through their board of directors, i.e. Apple and Disney are connected through Steve Jobs. Companies that share a lot of directors among one another create denser zones in the network, thus form little clusters. We measured which companies exert the largest influence overall and within each cluster. This reveals compelling new insights into large account management.

If company A and company B share a mutual director on their board of directors, they are linked through a line. The thicker the line, the more directors are shared.

Think-Tanks USA – Diffusion of Concepts

Project Description: The image shows a selection of US think-tanks and their affiliated institutions. The larger scope of the research project is to analyse the creation and diffusion of concepts, ideas and convictions through think-tanks on a global scale.

Legend: Nodes represent institutions. Think-tanks are highlighted. Red nodes represent conservative think-tanks and their affiliates. Blue nodes represent liberal think-tanks and their affiliates. Purple nodes indicate that these institutions are linked to both, conservative as well as liberal think tanks. Think-Tank X has a line to Harvard University if a person serves in a crucial function at both institutions. The thicker the line the more people connect Think-Tank X to Harvard.

Think-Tanks USA – Access to Diversity

Project Description: The image shows a selection of US think-tanks and their affiliated institutions. The larger scope of the research project is to analyse the creation and diffusion of concepts, ideas and convictions through think-tanks on a global scale. Here we were interested in the different types of affiliated institutions. How diverse is the pool of affiliates with respect to philantropie, university, government, corporations etc.

Legend: Nodes represent institutions. Think-tanks are highlighted. Each color represents a certain type of institution. (philantropie, university, government, corporations etc.) The pie charts show for instance how many percent of the Brookings Foundation's affiliates account for government, how many for foundations etc. Think-Tank X has a line to Harvard University if a person serves in a crucial function at both institutions. The thicker the line the more people connect Think-Tank X to Harvard.

Public Health - Movers and Shakers

Project Description: The network represents professional interaction of doctors within a certain therapeutical field of a medium sized European country. We identified

influential doctors within the target market and measured how their influence increased or decreased over a number of time periods. Movers,

influencers of tomorrow, were identified.

Legend: Nodes represent doctors. The larger the node, the larger the actor's influence in this time period. Lines represent professional interaction between doctors. The thicker the line, the stronger the interaction. Green nodes represent movers. Orange nodes represent shakers. Grey nodes are doctors with a specialization not relevant to the campaign.

Progressive Movement USA – Network Analysis

Project Description: The network visualization directs our view to the peaks of the progressive movement landscape in the US. If enterprises form a peak with others this must not necessarily reflect their influence on politics in general. It just shows that there are strong and dense ties between these enterprises forming the peak and more loose ties to those enterprises surrounding them. Many peaks suggest a rich variety of interests and formation of networks around these interests. Our research interest is ongoing. We intend to grow our database. This analysis is based on a network of 7531 people and 345 enterprises.

Legend: Nodes represent institutions of the progressive and liberal landscape in the US. The larger the node, the more influential the enterprise is within this network. Red nodes represent the peaks. Grey Nodes represent semiperipheral and peripheral enterprises. If enterprise A and enterprise B share a mutual director, trustee, advisor or chief editor on their boards, they are linked through a line. The thicker the line, the more people with any such functions are shared.
