Toshiba 12.1-inch SS RX2 Laptop Series - First Look Preview

Post by Ahmad » Sep 10, 2008 Views: 1982

Toshiba SS RX2 Series. All will feature a 12.1-inch LCD screen with 1280x800 resolution and house Intel's newer, ultra low-power SU9300 Core 2 Duo at 1.20GHz. Buyers will get 2GB of memory, with the option to bump it up to 3GB, while graphics are handled by the onboard GS45 Express Chipset. The range-topping SS RX2 T9GG and T9G will stand out from the remaining five notebooks thanks to their use of a 128GB solid-state drive instead of a 160GB hard disk drive. Compared to their predecessor, the RX1 (R500 in the US), the RX2 notebooks have come down slightly in price while offering slightly better value, although the specs are very close.

Apart from the drives, all seven are nearly identical, and share built-in Wi-Fi a/b/g/n capability, a fingerprint scanner, SD/SDHC card slot and DVD writer. For expandability, there is an e-SATA port and three USB 2.0 connections. Prices vary largely based on the preloaded software, and the T7G model includes Windows Vista Business but also comes with a Windows XP CD. The T8G and T8GG include Office Personal 2007 SP1 with PowerPoint 2007 SP1. The three models with the double G designation -- T7GG, T8GG and T9GG -- are equipped with a KDDI CDMA 1X WIN communications module for access to a wireless data network while on the go. Like a cellphone talk or data plan, however, the service requires a monthly subscription fee.

The 63A battery used in the SSD notebooks gives them a claimed 12.5 hours of battery life, while the same battery in the HDD-equipped notebooks will last 11.5 hours, Toshiba says. A standard 32A battery should last 6.2 hours. While they are not certified by any standards, the SSD-equipped SS RX2 notebooks will be able to withstand drops from up to 30 inches and shake off 100ml of liquid without a problem, Toshiba claims. The T9G is the lightweight of the bunch, tipping the scales at a claimed 1.9lbs.
