Opera Lodges Complaint Against Microsoft Over Web Browser Monopoly

Web Browser developer Opera Software ASA has complained to the European Commission against Microsoft. The complaint is lodged against the Windows maker for preventing other browser developers to participate in the competition by offering only Internet Explorer web browsers to Windows.

Opera said that Microsoft forces Windows users to use Internet Explorer by not offering an option for any other browser.

EU regulators are being asked by Opera to exercise the principles of their landmark antitrust ruling against Microsoft advocated by an EU court in September to Internet software.

It stated that Microsoft was exploiting its monopoly power as the trader of software to most of the world’s personal computer makers by giving away its Internet Explorer with Windows and not offering alternative programs.

As of now Microsoft has kept mum about the whole issue.

Opera also said that it had asked the software giant to stick to its own public pronouncements to support open Web standards. However, Microsoft has developed its own open format called Open OXML. Microsoft claims that the OXML is suitable for complex programs.
