Windows Home Server Bug Corrupts Files, warns Microsoft

Microsoft has released a critical warning stating that its Windows Home Server product may end up destroying pictures, torrents and various other files, permanently.

In the warning issued, the software company has cautioned users to not edit files stored on their Windows Home Servers. It has been found that editing and saving files on a home system that is connected to the Home Server could lead to data corruption within merely a week’s time.

According to Microsoft, “When you use certain programs to edit files on a home computer that uses Windows Home Server, the files may become corrupted when you save them to the home server. Several people have reported issues after they have used the following programs to save files to their home servers.”

Photos, Office Outlook files (2007), Office OneNote files (2003/2007), Microsoft Money files, Quicken files, QuickBooks files and Torrent files are the highly affected files that Microsoft has spoken about.

As of now, Microsoft has not yet revealed a proper schedule for the release of a patch to answer the problem. According to the company, the recent bug stems out of an internal flaw within the Windows Home Servers’ shared folders code. At present, the Redmond-based company is in the works of replicating the bug and better recognizing it.

The Windows Home Server operating system is essentially to assist handling the huge amount of available content. The Windows Home Server software is priced at $189.99, while several partners produce the physical hardware.
