Sophie Choudry stages a new avatar

Mumbai: Growing up in London and being an avid watcher of elaborate theatre productions there, Sophie Choudry admits that it is no surprise that she is ready to take a giant leap from the big screen to the stage. Debuting today, Sophie is glad that she is not just playing one, but five different roles -- a hilarious sojourn of running backstage to peel off her sexy-corporate-financer attire, straight into the long gowns of a nun.

Sophie is stepping on to the stage to sharpen her acting skills.Brought up on plays by Arthur Miller, Sophie says, "Being brought up in London automatically had me quite close to the stage." Not many would know, but in her A level exams, Sophie bagged a gold medal from the prestigious London Academy of Music and Dramatic Arts, after performing several forms of theatre -- cabarets, Shakespeare et al for her course.

Debuting in 1888 Dial India, Sophie admits she is a bag of nerves, "I am very, very nervous even after so many years on the stage either singing or performing. But I am glad that I have not been typecast in the usual 'sexy, cute and glamorous' role for the play. The audience will get to see a completely different side of me."

Sophie admits that it was playing five different characters in the play that caught her attention to sign up for it. She says, "I shuttle between playing diverse characters like a suicidal actress to a 13 year-old to a nun. It is only the voice projection that I learnt through music which is helping me to justify the different personalities of these characters."
