Microprocessor giant Intel has announced that they will soon embed solid-state storage drives in the upcoming platform for ultramobile PCs,(UMPCs).

Called the Z-P140 PATA SSD, this UMPC drive includes the Silverthorne processor and Poulsbo chipset. The main is to make more storage space available for ultra mobile PCs.

Intel also said that their Z-P140 PATA solid state storage drive will be provided to Original Equipment Manufacturers as an optional module.

The Intel Z-P140 PATA SSD will be embeddable on the motherboards made for the Menlow platform. Intel said it will display ultramobile PCs based on the Menlow architecture from vendors including Asus, BenQ and Lenovo at the Consumer Electronics Show at Las Vegas in January.

This SSD is expected to be available in capacities of 2GB and 4GB. But manufacturers will be able to embed up to 4 SSDs, providing 16GB of storage space.

In a few years, Intel plans to make these UMPC solid state drives available in larger capacities of 64GB.

Extremely tiny in size, Intel’s recently showcased SSD chip weighs just 0.6grams.

According to product line manager Don Larson, these Menlow-based devices will ship in the first half of 2008.
