Intel has announced the launch of the second version of Classmate PC at IDF in Shanghai. Affordability, complete functionality and a rugged Internet-centric computer platform are the key features of the latest version of the Classmate PC.

The second generation Classmate PC boasts of including an Intel Celeron M processor with 802.11b/g Wi-Fi and mesh network capabilities.

The Classmate PC will now be available in various configurations. The top configuration features a 9-inch screen, 6-cell battery, 512MB of memory, 30GB hard drive and a built-in webcam.

Besides, the rugged laptop supports various operating systems including Windows XP variants of the Linux. It would be preinstalled with the education software stack, making it ideal for classroom-learning environment.

Moreover, the software and content will be available in more than eight languages.

“Only 5 percent of the world’s children today have access to a PC or to the Internet,” said Andrew Chien, Intel vice president, Corporate Technology Group and director of Intel Research.

“Education is one of the best examples of how technology improves our lives. We have seen how technology helps teachers create fun learning experiences more efficiently. We have also been touched by children’s excitement when they are inspired by technology. The Intel-powered classmate PC is one of the ways we support the IT industry in spreading the benefits of technology in education for children around the world,” Chien added.

Intel has not mentioned the pricing and availability of Intel’s second generation Classmate PC. However Intel has announced that the updated Classmate PC is part of the Intel World Ahead Program, a global initiative aimed at spreading digital accessibility and educational opportunities.
