The boss of a top art gallery got the shock of his life when he found out his new "star" was a two-year-old. Mark Jamieson was thrilled by the vivid abstracts of Aelita Andre. He exhibited them and ran them in magazines after they had been recommended by photographer Nikka Kalashnikova.
Two year old Aelita Andre of Australia is making waves with her first art exhibition in a Melbourne art gallery, with her works being displayed alongside established adult artists.
However, skeptics doubt the authenticity of the art. Aelita Andre began painting before she could walk and talk, now the two-year-old's paintings have sparked debate on whether her work is that of a child prodigy, or simply a child being guided by her parents who are both artists themselves.
Robert Nelson, art critic and associate professor of art and design at Monash University told Reuters, "There's probably some degree of collaboration between parent and child." "The colorful backdrop, the calligraphic marks that was probably put there by a parent, that's not the work of a child, certainly not a child of that age," he said.
Andre's parents, Michael Andre and Nikka Kalashnikova, say they noticed her talent on the canvas from her play school work.
"I first noticed it in her playgroup when she was doing her water colors on paper. And to me I just naturally saw abstract representations, objects and scenes and various things," father Michael said.
The owner of the gallery where her works are being exhibited said he came to know of the artist's age only after accepting the art work.
